I use techniques rooted in classical art to create 21st century portraiture with an emphasis on structure, composition, and color. I am continually looking for new ways to represent the human face by exposing the planar structure of the form without losing the humanness of the subject.
I often combine portraiture with narrative objects and landscapes to depict themes of trial, revelation, and transformation. I anticipate that the viewer will recognize these themes as relating to their own shifting interpretations of them selves and experience the emotions shared by us all.
Born on the East coast in 1965 to an artist mother and accountant father, I grew up experiencing life from both creative and logical perspectives. This dichotomy of intuitive versus cerebral influences in my environment initially led me to pursue art in the graphic arts field where I spent 10 years creating art in a highly structured manner. Finally surrendering to the siren song of fine art, I enrolled full time at Laguna College of Art and Design in 2006, determined to unravel the mysteries of painting. Inspired by what I consider the ultimate subject - the human body and being, I discovered that portraiture is where my artistic passion lies. With my methods firmly seated in classical foundation, I use traditional inspiration to lay the base for modern portraits that tell the story behind the face.
